Hi there! I'm Ethan.
Welcome to my digital portfolio! Just like me, this website is intended to be an ever-developing project; an expression of myself as a person and designer. Here you can learn about the work I do, but also my life passions and hobbies that inspire me and my work.
About
about
I have over five years professional lighting design experience, first as a Design Assistant intern with HLB Lighting Design in 2015, then as a Lighting Designer at WSP from 2016 to 2019, next as a Lighting Designer at HLB from 2019 to 2021, and currently as a personal consultant for Neslund Lighting Design.
During my time at HLB I was a team member in the Boston office (working remotely from Denver), while also assisting in project work with the Denver office. Working with a large variety of lighting designers has been an incredible learning experience and has expanded my breadth of knowledge and project type/process experience while providing opportunities to influence design decisions on a variety of projects.
I am adept in lighting and electrical systems design. A Masters degree in Architectural Engineering from Penn State and my workplace experience with a multi-discipline engineering consulting firm has given me a broad working understanding of other building systems, including MEP, structural, AV, IT, etc. I was also a team member in the
thinkBOLDR Innovation Center
at WSP, working to integrate
disparate systems to improve the human experience through the
built environment. I collaborated
with project teams locally and nationally, internal and external,
ensuring aesthetic and effective systems design while meeting budgetary and schedule constraints to fulfill client requirements and desires.
I'm a big proponent of office culture. I love working in a fun, collaborative, and stimulating environment to learn from one another and grow as a team. My general attitude and energy contribute to this environment, and I always look for opportunities to make the workplace more enjoyable and productive. To reference my last performance review at WSP:
"His positive attitude, pop culture references, and
willingness to answer technical questions of others
bring much life and energy to our group"
...whether I'm pushing the beer cart around on Friday or organizing an office softball league or camping trip.
In my spare time I enjoy a variety of activities and hobbies. Having grown up in Alaska just about anything outdoors is fair game, but I particularly love hiking, camping, road / mountain / BMX biking, climbing, and snowboarding. I also play guitar and sing – hoping to one day start a punk rock band and tour the world playing angsty music for teens.
